The verbal war between the two officials started when Pompeo insulted Iranians by saying on November 7 that Iran must listen to the US if they want their people to eat.
On Saturday, Zarif tweeted that Pompeo is openly threatening to starve Iranians, which is a crime against humanity, in a desperate attempt to impose US whims on Iran.
On Monday, Pompeo repeated US officials’ lies and responded to Zarif tweeting, “Shame on #FakeNewsweek for helping @JZarif spread lies. The truth is: the U.S. does not, and never did, sanction food and medicine. They are exempt from sanctions, as are financial transactions related to humanitarian needs.”
Hours later, Zarif entered the stage, tweeting, “@SecPompeo has audacity to threaten crimes against humanity targeting ordinary Iranians; then attacks media for reporting his own words.”
“He should either own what he says, or disown what US does. Can't have it both ways,” Iranian FM stressed, posting the following transcript of Pompeo's remarks.
In a separate tweet some two hours later, Zarif referred to ICJ order and western media’s documents to prove “who is lying.”
Posting two photos, he wrote, “All reimposed US sanctions violate UN Security Council Res 2231. Intention to starve civilian population is crime against humanity. ICJ already refuted @SecPompeo's claim on humanitarian exemptions. Western media's factual accounts & attached letters show who's lying.”
